'90s Fashion Fix | Slip Dresses

Nothing says 1991 quite like a slip dress. A skimpy little dress, usually with shoestring straps, that has gone to garment university and graduated from sleep-wear to street-wear. Depending on the length of the slip dress the wearer may also require a pair of testicles to be brave enough to step outside wearing said slip dress.

An early pioneer of the slip dress was the ever-awesome Cyndi Lauper. Her performance in the opening scene of I Drove All Night (1989) is stirring; her red slip dress an obvious metaphor for the rage and despair building inside her after having her shoes stolen.

Always on point with current fashion trends, Kylie Minogue sports a slip dress/LBD hybrid in the video for Better The Devil You Know (1990). Gawd-yam I love that song and video! She nails it everytime.

Kylie's shoestring straps keep slipping off her shoulders which, oddly enough, sort of works well with the energy of the music video.

The slip dress also made its way into all of the major fashion and teen magazines in the early '90s, and we've managed to get our grubby little paws on a few of them for your viewing pleasure...

First up is one my all time favourite retro fashion editorials - 'Hip Slips' with Dolly fave Alison Brahe. Proving that God is not fair, Alison looks like this AND she snared Cameron Daddo. I can hear The Cure's 'Why Can't I Be You?' playing on the little turntable in my head.

Most of the slip dresses featured in magazine editorials were styled as evening/party wear. I highly doubt that my mother would have let me leave the house wearing most of these little numbers, so it's fortunate that I had enough self-awareness to realise that I probably didn't possess the necessary kahunas to wear them anyway.

The line between sleep-wear and street-wear is wafer thin here, and some slip dresses are best left draping over the bodies of the Alison Brahes of the world. Le sigh...
