It's hard to believe it was 30 years ago today that Top Gun was released! Aussies had to wait an extra 6 weeks but hey, it was definitely worth the wait.
The late Tony Scott directed this sterling masterpiece - despite being fired three times - and Tom Cruise was perfectly cast, making it completely impossible to think of the shortlisted Swayze, Penn, Cusack, Cage or anyone else in the role of Maverick. Pretty great supporting cast too!
It was a movie that spawned a swag full of quotable quotes. I've been known to throw 'negative ghostrider, the pattern is full' out there on occasions, & it's always nice when somebody 'gets it'.
The '80s really knew how to soundtrack too.
The Top Gun soundtrack is right up there with Dirty Dancing, Footloose, Flashdance & pretty much every John Hughes ever movie.
Whenever I hear Kenny Loggins I immediately think Top Gun. I wonder if he was pigeonholed as the 'Top Gun Dude' after his multiple contributions to the soundtrack? I guess it's not the worst thing in the world to be known for.
And let's not forget that volleyball scene! Playing With The Boys will forever be known as the homoerotic anthem that it is.
I can't say I'm a huge action movie fan, but this one is an all-time fave. It's always on high rotation at my house. There's only one small section of the movie that gives me the urks. When Maverick & Charlie are mackin' out, and Berlin's 'Take My Breath Away' is playing in the background - there's a line of saliva that stretches from Maverick's mouth to Charlie's mouth. How do you spell eww!?
Other than that small blurgh, this movie still holds up incredibly well today, don't you think?
30 years! Yikes!
